Japan Century of Design
Stamps, Envelopes, Brochure and Book.
Looking back on the 100 years of graphic design developed in Japan, and making celebratory products for it.
The complete process is at the bottom.

Japanese graphic design has been developing since the early 1990s. After the end of World War II, in order to better and faster to inspire the people, a large number of designers began to emerge. It was during this period that Japanese graphic design began to rise like the morning sun. During this century, there are three designers who have played an important role in Japanese graphic design. They not only established the position of Japanese graphic design but also provided a new direction for graphic designers around the world.
This project revolves around the 100-year development of graphic design in Japan and celebrates design around three important designers. Through the research on the development of Japanese graphic design and the analysis of the styles of three Japanese graphic designers, finally customized design ideas and styles. The final product is presented in the form of stamps, envelopes, information cards, and books.

I selected 3 Japanese graphic designers who are outstanding representatives in the history of Japanese graphic design. They not only revived the fragile spirit of the Japanese people after World War II but also promoted Japanese graphic design to the world and participated in worldwide graphic design work. And established the Japanese graphic design style in the world graphic design circle. In particular, Ikko Tanaka highlights minimalism in his work, using geometric shapes to construct wonderful works.

They are like the process of the sun rising.
1. Begin to give a glimmer of hope to Japanese graphic design.
2. Began to enter the heyday, leading Japanese graphic design to the world.
3. Based on the world's graphic design, well-known in the world.
These three stages will also be used as three chapters in the celebration book to introduce graphic designers who have contributed to Japanese graphic design in different periods.

The waves of Ukiyo-e are like a symbol of Japan. As long as you see this wave, you can think of Japan. It gave me inspiration, and I wanted to add the elements of ocean waves to my design.
In order to get the best picture quality, I bought a 1936 Remington Noiseless Typewriter from Facebook. I personally photographed all its angles.

Ikko Tanaka pushed Japanese graphic design to the top, while his design style also had an impact on the future of graphic design, allowing people to re-understand geometric design. He uses geometry and lines to compose his work. He is also the face of MUJI. Therefore, Tanaka was considered as the main style of the design.

In the design of stamps and envelopes, I used Ukiyo-e waves, and the bar line of the stamps used the style of Tanaka geometric cross. On the front of the envelope, the cancellation seal is composed of the cherry blossoms, the national flower of Japan. The top of the envelope is still a sea wave, and the carp comes out of the sea, which fits perfectly with the letter J of Japan.

There are more than just the three great masters mentioned above in the celebration books. There are many great designers in Japanese graphic history. The book introduces nine Japanese graphic designers who have influenced design around the world. At the same time, more historical background and work background are introduced and explained, and the rationale for the design elements of stamps and envelopes is introduced at the end of the book.
